The lawyer representing the man accused of manufacturing the bomb that caused the 1988 Lockerbie air disaster, which claimed 270 lives, has successfully secured a delay for the start of the trial.

On Monday, Washington District Judge Dabney Friedrich approved the request from Abu Agila Al Marimi's court-appointed lawyer for additional time to examine the evidence that will be presented against his client. Jury selection for Mr Al Marimi was initially penciled in to begin on August 25, but ongoing pre-trial hearings last week made it evident that the deadline would be missed.

The terrorist attack in 1988 resulted in the deaths of all 259 individuals on board Pan Am Flight 103. Additionally, 11 people on the ground in Lockerbie, Scotland, were killed by falling debris following the explosion, which happened shortly after the Pan Am flight departed from London on December 21. Among the 270 total victims, 190 were US citizens.

The defense team for alleged Pan Am Lockerbie bomb maker Abu Agil Al Marimi requested and received more time to prepare. Approximately 150 pieces of crash evidence are set to be presented during the proceedings, alongside witness testimonies from multiple countries. Furthermore, evidence will include passports, hotel records, receipts, telegrams, baggage tags, and letters originating from Libya, the UK, the US, Malta, and the territory formerly known as Czechoslovakia.

Interest in the case has intensified following the release of a six-part Netflix series titled The Bombing of Pan Am Flight 103, which depicts the events preceding the tragedy and the subsequent investigation. The series has secured a spot among Netflix’s top 10 television shows in the US.

Mr Al Marimi faced initial charges in 2020 and was taken into US custody in 2022, though health complications, issues with his defense team, and prolonged pre-trial discussions have continually postponed the trial. To date, only one individual, former Libyan intelligence officer Abdelbaset Al Megrahi, has been convicted in connection with the bombing. Al Megrahi passed away in 2012.
