FIFA President Gianni Infantino is facing mounting pressure and declining support as he attempts to secure a fourth term ahead of the upcoming elections. Having led the organization for over a decade, Infantino has become an increasingly divisive figure due to his close ties with high-profile global leaders and controversial revenue-maximization proposals.
Criticism intensified following his public associations with United States President Donald Trump, including presenting the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize at the World Cup 2026 draw in Washington, DC. Further backlash erupted when Infantino floated plans to involve private investors, led by Joshua Kushner, in future World Cup profits. Although the plan was subsequently abandoned following threats of European boycotts and internal dissent, significant damage was dealt to his reputation.
The upcoming FIFA presidential election is slated for March 18, 2027, in Rabat, Morocco, with candidates required to declare their candidacy by November 18. Potential challengers include Victor Montagliani, Nasser al-Khelaifi, Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, and Patrice Motsepe, while European football chief Aleksander Ceferin has ruled himself out.
Despite the challenges and calls for his removal from critics and rights groups, Infantino retains backing from key regions, including the African confederation, Mexico, and Argentina, as he continues his efforts to rally support ahead of the vote.
