Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr has issued an apology to his teammates and the club’s fans following a controversial red card during a 1-0 victory over Villarreal in La Liga at the Santiago Bernabeu. The forward now faces an anxious wait for a decision by the disciplinary committee, which could rule him out of Real Madrid's upcoming fixture against rivals Barcelona.

The Brazilian forward believed he had secured Real's second goal on Saturday, but the strike was overturned following a video assistant referee (VAR) review. Officials determined that Vinicius should be dismissed for pulling Nathan Saliba’s hair during the build-up to the goal. Vinicius, who entered the match in the 52nd minute and was sent off 20 minutes later, took to social media after the game to express remorse, stating, “sorry to the team and the fans”.

Referee Isidro Diaz de Mera was instructed by the VAR to review the moments leading up to the celebration. After the review, the referee disallowed the goal and brandished a red card. Real manager Jose Mourinho had initially joined the players in celebration before the decision left Vinicius visibly furious. The player screamed at Diaz de Mera and had to be physically restrained by his teammates as he exited the pitch.

Villarreal defender Juan Foyth commented on the incident, saying, “I don’t think he meant to hurt anyone, but it is a red card.” In his official match report, Diaz de Mera noted that after receiving the red card, Vinicius “protested my decision, raising his voice, toward where I was standing in an aggressive manner, and being held back by teammates”.

Under Royal Spanish Football Federation regulations, pulling an opponent’s hair is classified as violent conduct. According to Article 130 of the league’s rules, the standard sanction for violent conduct that does not result in injury is a suspension ranging from one to three matches. Real Madrid's upcoming fixtures include matches against Sevilla, Barcelona, and Racing Santander, making a potential absence from El Clasico a significant blow for the 26-year-old Brazil international. Notably, Mourinho did not attend the mandatory post-game news conference.
