A devastating fire broke out in the children’s ward at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad, resulting in the deaths of at least 15 newborns, according to reports from local media.
Citing hospital officials, Geo News reported on Wednesday that the nursery at PIMS was housing 16 newborns when the tragic incident occurred, with only one infant managing to be rescued.
According to the outlet, officials stated that the blaze was triggered by an explosion in an air-conditioner compressor located inside the nursery.
Authorities confirmed that the fire has now been successfully extinguished, and firefighters remain at the scene to conduct cooling operations.
