A Swedish crime thriller centering on a killer targeting police officers has quickly become Netflix's latest international sensation. Blood Sacrifice (known as Blodsoffer in Swedish) debuted at No. 1 on Netflix's global chart for non-English television following its August 20 release, racking up seven million views in its first four days.
Created by British screenwriter George Kay, the five-part series stars Jakob Oftebro and Peter Andersson as an estranged father and son brought back together by a harrowing murder investigation.
Set in Stockholm, the plot kicks off with an emergency call reporting a home invasion at a summer house. Two police officers dispatched to the scene find the property empty, but both are discovered murdered the following day. These killings spark a wave of attacks targeting law enforcement.
Detective Thomas Berg, portrayed by Oftebro, leads the investigation and is forced to enlist the help of his estranged father Alfred, a retired detective played by Andersson. As the body count rises and the danger edges closer to Thomas's personal life, the two men must set aside years of resentment to track down the killer.
While Blood Sacrifice features classic elements of Nordic noir—such as gruesome murders and troubled detectives—Kay emphasizes that the core of the story is the complex dynamic between Thomas and Alfred.
Kay brings significant experience to the project, having previously created the hit French mystery thriller Lupin starring Omar Sy for Netflix, as well as the Apple TV thriller Hijack starring Idris Elba. Blood Sacrifice is directed by Kristoffer Nyholm, whose past work includes the Danish crime drama The Killing and the British series Taboo.
The supporting cast features Alexander Abdallah as John-Jo Persson, alongside Electra Hallman, Henrik Norlen, Lisette Pagler, Magnus Krepper, Irina Bjorklund, Anders Mossling, and Anna-Maria Kall.
Consisting of just five episodes with the first two running around 48 and 49 minutes, the series is designed for a swift viewing experience. Although it has achieved massive initial success, Netflix has not yet officially confirmed whether a second season will happen.
