Chinese President Xi Jinping is scheduled to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Bishkek as part of an official state visit to Kyrgyzstan, followed by a trip to Egypt from August 30 to September 3, Beijing’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated during a daily news conference on Wednesday that at the SCO summit—which will also feature member states such as Russia and Iran—Xi will focus on expanding cooperation and addressing key international and regional concerns.
During the visit, the Chinese president will hold official discussions with his Kyrgyz counterpart, Sadyr Japarov, and participate in a series of state events, according to Lin.
In Egypt, Xi is set to meet with President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi for high-level talks designed to foster peace and stability in the area, Lin noted. Marking Xi's first visit to Egypt in a decade, the trip carries substantial importance for strengthening bilateral relations.
The upcoming diplomatic tour unfolds amid ongoing tensions between Iran and the United States that have expanded across the Middle East, impacting shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz and affecting international oil supplies. China maintains extensive economic connections with the Middle East, which served as its primary supplier of crude oil imports prior to the conflict.
This journey marks Xi's second international excursion of the year, following his visit to North Korea in June.
