FIFA president Gianni Infantino is facing intense pressure from three football confederations to resign, with European Leagues president Claudius Schaefer declaring that he has no future at FIFA and stressing the urgent need for structural reform.
In an interview with The Athletic, Schaefer stated that the European Leagues, representing 53 professional men's and women's football leagues, harbor deep concerns regarding the leadership of Gianni Infantino. He questioned the suitability of Gianni Infantino to remain as president, pointing out that presidential influence has continuously expanded while major decisions are made without proper stakeholder consultation.
The criticism follows a bitter dispute sparked by a now-abandoned proposal by FIFA to sell a portion of the World Cup commercial rights. Currently, Gianni Infantino faces demands for resignation from three major regional bodies, including UEFA, AFC, and CONCACAF, with discussions also turning toward a potential vote of no confidence.
Additional controversies involve the inaugural FIFA peace prize presented to Donald Trump in December, as well as the reversal of a suspension for Folarin Balogun during the World Cup following intervention from the United States President.
Schaefer emphasized that these actions constitute legal and governance breaches under Swiss law, questioning the integrity of the sport. Although Gianni Infantino plans to seek re-election for a fourth term next year, Schaefer maintained that achieving meaningful governance reforms is the top priority and must be accomplished under new leadership.
