Kuwait announced on Wednesday the execution of the largest drugs bust in its national history, successfully confiscating nearly $500 million worth of a prescription medicine widely used as a recreational party drug.

According to Sheikh Fahad Al Yousef, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, the massive haul comprised five million tonnes of powder alongside almost four million capsules prepared for distribution.

The seized substance is identified as Lyrica, a brand-name medication primarily prescribed for anxiety and epilepsy management, which produces alcohol-like intoxicating effects when abused. Sheikh Fahad revealed the $485 million (150 million Kuwaiti dinars) operation during a dedicated drug prevention event, adding that law enforcement also dismantled an illicit factory dedicated to producing Lyrica and seized various capsule-manufacturing equipment.

Kuwaiti state media emphasized that the raid illustrates both the severe danger presented by these substances and the rigorous measures deployed to fight the crisis.

While Lyrica or pregabalin serves valid medical purposes—such as mitigating seizure-inducing brain activity, reducing anxiety chemicals, and relieving nerve pain associated with shingles and diabetes—it has transformed into a frequently abused recreational drug across the Middle East. Prior incidents in the region include Kuwait's 2023 seizure of 15 million illegal pills at a farm near the Saudi border, as well as UAE police interventions targeting dealers marketing Lyrica over WhatsApp alongside crystal meth and hashish.

Highlighting the impact of new legislation, Sheikh Fahad noted that a stricter drugs law enacted last year has become a powerful deterrent for traffickers, with Gulf state authorities collaborating seamlessly to eliminate narcotics.

Alongside these efforts, Kuwait continues to combat the trafficking of Captagon, a prominent amphetamine. Recent joint initiatives include a February operation with Iraq resulting in the seizure of over 300,000 Captagon pills, as well as a collaboration with Dubai Police in the UAE that intercepted more than 14 million Captagon pills concealed within corn sacks across five shipping containers.
