Globe-trotting educators who have relocated to the UAE just in time for the new academic year remain undeterred by the Iran conflict, eagerly anticipating the next chapter of their professional careers. They form part of a cohort of more than 1,500 new recruits joining the Gems Education network, which operates schools throughout the Emirates, Qatar, and Egypt. These professionals will be ready to welcome hundreds of thousands of pupils back to classrooms nationwide for the highly anticipated first day of school on Monday.

The 2026-27 academic year begins with renewed optimism among staff, pupils, and parents, who previously faced significant disruption following the outbreak of the US-Iran war on February 28. Schools temporarily transitioned to remote learning, and numerous summer exams were cancelled as a precautionary measure when the UAE and other Gulf states faced attacks from Iran. Newly arrived teachers shared their perspectives during the annual introductory event hosted by Gems, the UAE's largest private education group, held at Atlantis - The Palm in Dubai and titled Gems Awareness Day.

Hosea Bosire, an economics teacher hailing from Kenya, expressed enthusiasm about starting the school year in a new country after initially questioning whether to accept the offer due to regional tensions. Although he considered alternative offers, he decided to move forward and has no regrets. Inspired by the rapid development of education in the UAE, Mr. Bosire aims to shape well-rounded pupils capable of making a global impact.

Mayuresh Phatak relocated to the UAE from Mumbai, India, drawn by the vibrant diversity among both the teaching staff and the pupil population. Teaching Spanish and theory of knowledge, Mr. Phatak highlighted how classrooms filled with individuals from varied backgrounds foster a unified community that transcends differences in race, ethnicity, and colour.

Nahla Hegab, a science teacher from Egypt who joined Gems Al Khaleej International School, experienced the height of the conflict firsthand earlier in the year. Despite feeling overwhelmed rather than frightened, she expressed trust in the management and a deep sense of safety. Looking ahead, Ms. Hegab prioritizes the effective integration of artificial intelligence into her teaching to properly prepare pupils for technological advancements with integrity.

The arrival of the class of 2026-27 elevates the total number of teachers employed across the Gems Education network to over 10,000, representing more than 100 nationalities. Gems Education noted that it typically receives upwards of 500,000 job applications annually. Sunny Varkey, founder and chairman of Gems Education, emphasized the vital role of investing in teaching talent to unlock the potential of the younger generation, noting that exceptional educators remain the most significant investment for academic excellence.
