World Athletics President Sebastian Coe has committed to personally appearing in court to defend his organization's ongoing sanctions against Russia. The announcement comes after the Russian athletics federation lodged a new challenge at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

In July, the global track and field body decided to maintain the ban on Russian and Belarusian athletes, which was initially introduced in March 2022 following the invasion of Ukraine. Russian Athletics has criticized these restrictions, calling them "selective and politicised" and arguing that they hinder the organization from properly representing Russian competitors internationally.

Meanwhile, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), through President Kirsty Coventry, announced that Russian athletes will be permitted to participate in team events and qualifiers for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics to ensure athletes are not penalized for governmental actions. This approach diverges from other Olympic sports like World Gymnastics and the International Skating Union, which have loosened restrictions.

Speaking at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, Sebastian Coe firmly stood by World Athletics' policy. "Well, I will be in the court of arbitration defending that position. That's how I feel about it," he stated, emphasizing that the focus is on maintaining the integrity of competition rather than politics or passports.

The ongoing conflict has deeply affected Sebastian Coe, who previously visited Ukraine and helped establish a dedicated support fund for Ukrainian athletes in 2022. While he noted that sport should not obstruct a Russian return if a peace agreement is reached, he affirmed that his stance on the matter remains resolute.
