British cyclist Finlay Tarling, 19, tragically died following a crash during the eighth stage of the Tour of Portugal, as confirmed by race organisers and his NSN Development Team.

Organisers announced on social media on Friday that the fatal incident occurred during a “serious accident” on the route between Melgaco and Fafe. Portuguese broadcaster RTP reported that Finlay Tarling was involved in a head-on collision with an unconnected vehicle travelling in the opposite direction. Consequently, the stage was suspended with approximately 20km (12 miles) remaining, and the podium ceremony was cancelled out of respect and mourning.

The NSN Development Team released a statement confirming the death and sharing condolences with the parents and brother Josh, who competes for the Netcompany-Ineos team. “Fin was a much-loved member of our team but most importantly, he was a son, a brother, and a friend to so many. He will be deeply missed,” the team stated.

Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro also shared condolences on X, stating that the tragedy “leaves us deeply shaken.” The NSN Development Team is co-owned by former Barcelona football star Andres Iniesta.
