“The search for the perpetrators, whose identities are currently unknown, is under way,” police stated on social media on Sunday, noting that the precise motives and circumstances surrounding the event in Aarau, located north of Zurich, remain unclear.
Swiss newspaper Blick reported that the gunfire erupted prior to 3am (01:00 GMT) near the Aarauer Rave. Approximately 3,500 attendees participated in the annual techno event, which ran from 3pm on Saturday until 2am on Sunday.
Authorities confirmed an active search operation and urged the public to submit any video footage or photographs related to the incident. Blick shared elevated video footage provided by a reader, capturing a dark street scene accompanied by the sound of multiple gunshots.
Large sections of Aarau remain cordoned off by police, who have also stepped up security measures outside the town as a precaution. Police spokeswoman Vanessa Rumpold informed Blick that the shooting took place at the racecourse hosting the gathering. One witness described hearing “bursts of gunfire,” the daily reported.
Although Switzerland maintains one of the highest gun ownership rates in Europe, violent mass shootings are uncommon. The country adopted stricter gun regulations in 2019.
