Viral video footage showing 97-year-old Gunmaya Bohra sitting inside the bucket of a mechanical digger, completely caked in mud, has emerged as one of the most striking moments of Nepal’s devastating floods. In the widely shared images, Ms Bohra sits silently as rescuers transport her through thick grey-brown sludge and debris in Trishuli Bazar, located in the Nuwakot district.

Four days after the disaster, family members and media tracked down Ms Bohra at Kathmandu’s Bir Hospital, where she was recovering from the ordeal. The elderly woman was resting in a hospital bed surrounded by relatives, having escaped serious injury despite being too frail to speak initially. Her grandson, Rasik Bohra, a student at Herald College Kathmandu studying for an MBA, shared his emotional shock upon discovering the viral footage of his grandmother on his phone.

According to her family, Ms Bohra had been trapped in the mud for roughly eight to nine hours in Kabilash, Nuwakot, before small movements alerted rescuers and relatives to her survival. With roads destroyed and impassable, heavy machinery was brought in to clear a path, and rescuers ultimately placed her inside a large metal bucket to carry her across the debris to safety.

While Ms Bohra is recovering well and the government is covering her hospital expenses, the family's ordeal is far from over. Rasik Bohra noted that several relatives and community members, including his maternal uncle, remain missing amid ongoing communication blackouts and widespread destruction across the region.
