Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has elevated longtime adviser Erlan Karin to the newly established position of vice president, a role created under a new constitution adopted earlier this year.

The announcement on Monday positions Karin, who has served as a top aide since Tokayev took over the presidency in 2019, as first in line to succeed the leader of the Central Asian country. President Tokayev praised Karin as an experienced public servant with extensive knowledge of state governance during local media reports, describing him as a true patriot with a broad outlook and years of public administration experience.

The 50-year-old Karin brings a background in counter-terrorism and has established himself as a central figure in advancing Tokayev’s political ideology, known as "New Kazakhstan." In addition to this appointment, Tokayev proposed reappointing Olzhas Bektenov as prime minister, a role he has maintained since 2024. Both key political appointments received swift approval from the parliament, which is heavily influenced by the pro-Tokayev Adilet party.

Under the updated constitution, Tokayev, 73, remains eligible to seek another seven-year presidential term when his current term concludes in 2029, despite general constitutional limits restricting presidents to a single term. Tokayev, a former Soviet diplomat and senior United Nations official, initially assumed office as the handpicked successor of Nursultan Nazarbayev, who governed Kazakhstan from 1991 until 2019.

Tokayev later distanced himself from his predecessor in 2022 following widespread nationwide unrest that resulted in hundreds of fatalities, which the administration framed as an attempted coup by figures tied to the Nazarbayev era. Kazakhstan continues to serve as a major global exporter of energy and minerals, including uranium for nuclear power, while balancing diplomatic relations with Russia, the West, and China.
