President Donald Trump has once again declared that Iran is “dead”, calling for the country’s leadership to face trial for what he termed “war crimes against humanity”. Speaking on Monday, Trump also promised a swift response to a recent Iranian attack on a military base hosting US troops in Jordan.
These remarks came as the US-Israel war on Iran marked its seventh month, characterized by renewed clashes and no clear end in sight. In a social media post, Trump wrote that Iran is officially a failed nation, citing a lack of a functional navy or air force, a collapsed currency, unpaid soldiers and police, soaring inflation at 300 percent, and leadership in total disarray.
While Trump has frequently claimed that the Iranian governing system is collapsing, the regime has maintained its position without major defections, with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) leading the war effort. Hostilities flared up again after the US military struck Larak Island, targeting rocket launchers intended for naval mines near the Strait of Hormuz. In retaliation, Iran launched missiles at the base hosting US troops in Jordan.
Vowing to retaliate, Trump told Fox News that the US intends to hit them hard. This latest escalation follows a shift in tactics by the Trump administration from military operations toward economic pressure, highlighting the persistent risk of ongoing conflict in the absence of a permanent agreement.
Additionally, Trump alleged that Iran's crackdown on anti-government demonstrators has resulted in over 100,000 deaths, calling for war crime trials. Iranian authorities previously reported a death toll of 3,117, attributing casualties to Israel-backed rioters. Meanwhile, accusations of war crimes have been exchanged throughout the conflict, including a notable strike on a girls' school in Minab that resulted in numerous fatalities.
