The Department of Defence announced on Monday that it has secured two pivotal agreements designed to significantly boost the manufacturing of interceptor missiles. Recent stockpiles of these critical weapons have run low as the US actively defends against Iranian drone and missile strikes targeting American bases and allies in the region.
Because missile production is a slow process, it will require years for the US to fully replenish its inventories. In an official statement, the Department of Defence revealed it has entered into seven-year framework agreements with General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems and Lockheed Martin to ramp up output for two premier US missile-defence systems.
These new accords are structured to streamline production and speed up delivery times for the Patriot Pac-3 missiles and Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (Thaad) interceptors. Michael Duffey, the undersecretary for acquisition and sustainment, explained that the agreements will minimize bureaucratic delays, enabling the US defence industry to accelerate manufacturing by eliminating red tape.
"Today's announcement represents an example of the evolution of how we partner with industry to expand the arsenal of freedom, outpace emerging threats and ensure the warfighter never faces a fair fight," Michael Duffey stated. This strategic initiative arrives amid surging global demand for US missile-defence systems across the Middle East and Europe.
