Fears that a weeks-long lull in the ongoing war has come to an end heightened on Tuesday as the US and Iran engaged in a series of retaliatory strikes. Iranian media reported multiple explosions near Bandar Abbas, located on the Strait of Hormuz, early Wednesday. Local officials confirmed that an additional strike in Sirik resulted in the deaths of at least four individuals, including a child, attending a wedding.

Supreme leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei stated that Iran would deliver "unforgettable lessons for the American enemy." Prior to these developments, US Central Command announced that its military forces were actively targeting assets associated with Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. According to US officials, the offensive followed recent, unsuccessful attempts by the IRGC to target commercial shipping vessels in the Strait of Hormuz alongside US service members stationed throughout the region.

US President Donald Trump characterized the "large and powerful" operations as a direct response to the "Iranians’ failed attempt at adding sea mines to the strait … and the Iranians shooting eight missiles, all successfully knocked down, at our military base in Jordan." Utilizing Truth Social, President Trump issued a warning stating that "if the failed nation of Iran retaliates for this very justified attack, they will be hit again at a much harder and higher level." Furthermore, he cautioned about the "biggest attack of them all," asserting that it was "waiting in the wings and, when it is over, there will be very little left of the Islamic republic of Iran."

In the wake of the military actions, the semi-official news agency Mehr reported that the IRGC initiated a "regrettable response" directed at the US operations. Simultaneously, the IRGC distributed video footage purportedly capturing ballistic missiles being fired toward US military installations situated in Jordan. Centcom declined to issue a statement regarding the reported strike at the wedding.

Before these alternating hostilities commenced over the weekend, the US and Iran had maintained an uneasy stalemate, characterized by intermittent diplomatic discussions aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Instead, the US had concentrated its efforts on exerting economic pressure on Iran, highlighted by a fresh wave of sanctions introduced over the preceding days and anticipations of additional economic measures.
