UEFA has officially opened disciplinary proceedings against Fenerbahce players Matteo Guendouzi and Mason Greenwood following a turbulent Champions League playoff match against Olympique Lyonnais, the Turkish club announced.

In an official statement released on Thursday, Fenerbahce stated, “Our club will present the necessary defences before the relevant UEFA bodies in order to protect the rights and interests of our players and Fenerbahce during this process.”

The investigation stems from allegations that French midfielder Matteo Guendouzi and English forward Mason Greenwood made provocative gestures toward Lyon supporters after Fenerbahce secured a 2-1 victory last month. The incident sparked a pitchside brawl as Matteo Guendouzi left the field, escalating into chaotic clashes between players and coaching staff both on and off the pitch during the away team's celebrations.

Fenerbahce confirmed that the club itself is also facing scrutiny over the post-match events. A UEFA spokesperson commented, “Everything from that match is still with the disciplinary body.”

Despite the chaotic conclusion to the fixture, Fenerbahce successfully advanced to the league phase of the Champions League following a 3-2 aggregate triumph over Olympique Lyonnais.
