Warning: this article contains spoilers. After spending much of its third season moving between two timelines centuries apart, Silo finally brings them together in a finale that answers some of the show's longest-running questions – and sets up an entirely new battle for Juliette Nichols. Episode 10 reveals the identity of The Algorithm, explains what became of congressman Daniel Keene (Ashley Zukerman) and his pilot sister Charlotte (Jessica Brown Findlay), and shows the horrifying lengths those controlling the silos were prepared to go to in order to preserve their experiment.
Perhaps the most important question comes from Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson), echoing something she asked in episode nine: if the silos were built to protect humanity, why was The Safeguard created to kill everyone inside them? The finale opens with another jump forward in the Before Times. Daniel, having undergone cryogenic sleep and memory manipulation, has emerged as Troy, a trusted specialist working at the heart of the operation. Charlotte has undergone a similar transformation and is now known as Susan, a senior drone commander. From Silo 1's control centre, they watch as more than 2,000 residents of Silo 17 emerge during the rebellion.
Troy orders drones to target the sheriff leading the uprising. Susan refuses, pointing out that there are women and children among the crowd, prompting Troy to dismiss her from the operation. What follows is one of the most disturbing sequences Silo has produced. Troy authorises the mass extermination of Silo 17's residents, watching almost impassively as thousands of people are killed. When their screams become too much, he simply orders the audio to be switched off. The scene demonstrates just how thoroughly Daniel has been transformed.
The finale then returns to Silo 18 – and two of season three's biggest mysteries suddenly converge. The Algorithm is Victor. The seemingly all-knowing intelligence that has been directing Camille Sims (Alexandria Riley) and manipulating events inside Silo 18 is revealed to be the same man who helped erase Daniel's memories centuries earlier. Meanwhile, Juliette's attempt to permanently disable The Safeguard reaches its most dangerous stage. Still in custody, she can do little as her allies in Mechanical and the Down Deep attempt to physically cap the pipe capable of pumping deadly gas into Silo 18.
Camille finally discovers what loyalty to The Algorithm will cost her. Realising the system intends to activate The Safeguard and kill everyone in Silo 18 rather than simply bring its population back under control, she turns against it. Pretending that her raiders are still suppressing the rebellion, Camille secretly orders them to switch sides, giving Juliette's allies the opportunity they need to cap the poison pipe just in time.
Knowing that blocking one pipe does not remove the wider danger, Juliette uses the horizontal tunnel system connecting the silos to formulate a far more ambitious plan: rather than wait for Silo 1 to find another way to destroy them, they will strike Silo 1 first, setting things up for an explosive season four. Juliette and her allies eventually make their way towards the enormous underground door first encountered by Lukas Kyle (Avi Nash) in season two, episode nine, where Troy is waiting for her on the other side. Troy offers a compromise that The Safeguard will not be activated if Silo 18 makes no attempt to contact another silo, which Juliette appears to accept while secretly planning to use the tunnels to reach Silo 1.
The finale has one last revelation to deliver as Troy discovers that Victor has killed himself, leaving behind a message containing the answer to the flashes of a woman he has been experiencing. The woman is Helen Drew (Jessica Henwick) – Daniel's wife and the mother of his child. Season four now appears set to shift the fight beyond the confines of Silo 18, with Juliette and her allies targeting Silo 1 directly to confront those responsible for The Safeguard.
