Mohamed Salah Explains His Shocking Move to Trabzonspor After Leaving Liverpool

Egyptian superstar Mohamed Salah has opened up on his high-profile move to Trabzonspor, citing an ongoing hunger for new challenges and a compelling project presented by club president Ertuğrul Doğan as the primary catalysts for his decision.

The 34-year-old winger, who finalized a two-year free agent deal through 2028 after a trophy-laden nine-year tenure at Liverpool, detailed his motivations in an interview published by Turkish outlet Sporx. Reflecting on the factors behind his sustained success at the highest level, the Egyptian forward emphasized a lifelong need for self-reinvention.

Searching for a fresh spark after achieving domestic and European glory at Anfield, where he earned legendary status among the supporters, he viewed a move to the Süper Lig as the ideal next chapter. The persuasive vision of Trabzonspor’s leadership proved decisive during negotiations, with Ertuğrul Doğan’s ambitions for the club convincing the veteran winger to commit to the Turkish outfit.

That conviction was instantly reinforced upon arrival, as thousands of ecstatic fans greeted him at Istanbul airport—a reception that stunned even his former Liverpool teammates. According to statements carried by Ajansspor, several ex-Anfield colleagues reached out shortly after his landing, admitting they had rarely witnessed such fanatical support.

Looking ahead, the veteran attacker has set his sights on silverware, identifying both the Süper Lig title and the UEFA Conference League as primary targets. Calling on Trabzonspor supporters to maintain their fervent backing through inevitable high and low points of the season, he pledged that the squad would spare no effort to deliver trophies to the city.
