Egypt has initiated preparations for its annual campaign to combat severe air pollution, commonly referred to as the “Black Cloud,” during the autumn 2026 season, according to Local Development and Environment Minister Manal Awad.
Awad stated that authorities will depend on early weather forecasts and emissions monitoring to intervene proactively before pollution levels deteriorate. Early-warning data suggests that stagnant or light-wind conditions could represent approximately 37 percent of the autumn period, rising from 33 percent during the previous year, which heightens the risk of pollutant accumulation.
The comprehensive strategy features intensified inspections targeting agricultural waste burning, industrial facilities, brick kilns, and landfills, alongside daily vehicle-emissions checks.
Additionally, the ministry plans to encourage alternatives to burning rice straw and will maintain a 24-hour environmental emergency room to process reports and dispatch response teams.
