Manchester City had to dig deep to secure a narrow 1-0 victory against Coventry City, maintaining a flawless record of three wins from three matches in the Premier League on Saturday.

City, who continued their heavy spending with the acquisition of Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea for a British-record £125 million, initially looked poised to dominate Coventry. This expectation grew after manager Enzo Maresca handed debuts to both Fernandez and fellow deadline-day signing Iliman Ndiaye. Fernandez quickly made his presence felt, playing a pivotal role in the 26th minute at the Etihad Stadium by sliding a pass for Antoine Semenyo, whose cross was headed in by Erling Haaland to open the scoring.

Although Haaland later had another goal ruled out, it was Frank Lampard's Coventry side that increasingly asserted themselves, forcing City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma into a series of crucial saves. Despite the pressure, City held firm to claim the three points and move to the top of the table with nine points.

The standout positive for City was the impressive performance of Fernandez, who offered a promising glimpse of the future. Though not initially expected to start, a last-minute back problem suffered by Nico O'Reilly during the warm-up thrust the Argentine midfielder into the starting lineup. The 25-year-old responded with a composed display, repeatedly piercing Coventry's defensive lines alongside Elliot Anderson, who helped dictate the tempo. Together, they drove City's possession game to 803 completed passes, the highest tally since a 2-0 win over Sheffield United in 2023.

"I really liked today for different reasons," Maresca remarked. "First half we could have scored one or two more, but we worked together to win so I am happy. It is difficult against teams in a low block. I felt we dealt very well with that. Not all the performances are going to be nice, you also need ugly moments."

Maresca revealed that Fernandez learned he was making his debut only moments before kickoff. "In warm-up Nico O'Reilly felt something in his back, not serious," he said. "Enzo came in, his first appearance in front of the home fans was ideal."

Elsewhere in the Premier League, Crystal Palace earned their first victory of the campaign by coming from behind twice to defeat Fulham 3-2, featuring two goals from Tyrick Mitchell and a winner by Ben Chilwell. Newcastle United recovered from a two-goal deficit to draw 2-2 at home against Bournemouth, who scored first for the third consecutive game but remain without a victory. Tottenham Hotspur secured their first point of the season in a 0-0 draw at Nottingham Forest without registering a single shot on target. Brighton & Hove Albion drew 1-1 at home with Leeds United, while the match between Brentford and Sunderland also ended in a 1-1 draw.

In Friday's action, Alexander Isak scored twice inside the opening nine minutes to guide Liverpool to a 2-0 win away at promoted Ipswich Town, marking the first victory under new manager Andoni Iraola. Cody Gakpo, who was the target of a transfer bid by Manchester City earlier in the week, created both goals as Liverpool started strongly and comfortably controlled the remainder of the fixture.
