The Ange Postecoglou honeymoon is over at Al Nassr following a 2-1 defeat against Al Ittihad on Saturday, marking the Saudi champions' first loss of the season. Cristiano Ronaldo played the full 90 minutes and appeared frustrated as his side suffered their first setback under the new Australian head coach.
Al Ittihad striker George Ilenikhena opened the scoring just four minutes into the match with a close-range header. He thought he had scored a second on 18 minutes, but his effort was ruled out for a marginal offside. However, Ilenikhena soon found the net again after collecting a pass from Houssem Aouar and lifting a finish over the goalkeeper to make it 2-0 on 22 minutes.
Al Nassr responded on 36 minutes when Angelo Gabriel scored from a rebound after goalkeeper Predrag Rajkovic denied Joao Felix. Despite pushing for an equaliser in the second half, Al Nassr were denied by Rajkovic's strong performance.
The defeat leaves Al Nassr three points behind rivals Al Hilal at the top of the table. Coach Postecoglou expressed frustration with the result but remained confident in his squad's character and ability to bounce back.
In other matches, Al Hilal secured a 2-0 victory over Al Shabab with goals from Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Ruben Neves, maintaining their perfect start to the season. Meanwhile, Al Ahli Saudi defeated Al Riyadh 5-0, featuring two penalties from Ivan Toney, and Al Qadsiah overcame Diriyah 2-0 with goals from Mateo Retegui and Julian Quinones.
