Rescue teams spent four days attempting to reach the child Ayoub, according to Bawabat Al-Jazayer. The civil protection agency in Algeria announced that the body of a 10-year-old boy was recovered from a well located in the western province of el-Bayadh, concluding a gruelling four-day rescue effort that captured the nation's attention.

In a statement published on Facebook on Saturday, the agency confirmed that rescue units reached the boy, Ayoub, who had tragically passed away, and successfully retrieved his body. The organization noted that local authorities alongside other agencies mobilized every available resource for the mission.

Ayoub fell into the dry well on Wednesday while walking home through the village of Errokn, situated in the municipality of Ghassoul. He stepped on a wooden board that covered the well opening, which collapsed beneath him. He plummeted into the shaft, measuring approximately 80 metres (262 feet) deep and 40cm (15.75 inches) in diameter.

Due to the narrow dimensions, rescuers could not descend directly into the well. Instead, they excavated a parallel shaft to access the boy via a horizontal passage, utilizing heavy machinery and technical expertise over several days. Officials reported that the operation faced significant complications from loose soil and hard layers of rock.

Under the leadership of provincial governor Noureddine Belarbi, authorities in el-Bayadh established a crisis response unit consisting of civil protection, security, and military personnel. Throughout the ordeal, large crowds of local residents gathered near the site to monitor the operation and provide support to the family. Additional civil protection units were subsequently deployed as the rescue reached what officials characterized as a decisive phase on its fourth day.

The death of Ayoub has reignited public debate across Algeria concerning the safety hazards posed by unsecured rural wells. Commentators have raised serious concerns over the absence of regulations governing these structures, particularly in remote regions. This incident drew comparisons to the 2018 tragedy in Msila province, where a man fell into a 100-metre (328-foot) well prompting a nine-day recovery operation, as well as the widely publicized 2022 case of Moroccan toddler Rayan, who tragically died after falling into a 32-metre (105-foot) well and remaining trapped for over 100 hours during an operation that commanded global attention.
