The United Nations’ top official in Nepal has made an emotional appeal for international assistance, warning that survivors of the catastrophic Himalayan flooding last month experienced total devastation in a matter of minutes. Lila Pieters Yahia, the UN Resident Coordinator, stated that communities along the China-Nepal border are struggling to come to terms with the scale of the disaster after torrential floods on August 26 swept through mountain districts, destroying vital infrastructure including roads, bridges, and hydropower dams.

Reflecting on the tragedy, Lila Pieters Yahia told the AFP news agency in Kathmandu that families lost their homes, livelihoods, and breadwinners in just one to two minutes. The disaster resulted in at least 1,384 deaths and left more than 5,500 people missing across Nepal and the Tibet region of China. Among the missing are over 800 foreign nationals from at least 34 countries, consisting of both tourists and pilgrims.

With many communities near the epicentre remaining isolated due to washed-out roads, the United Nations has partnered with Nepal’s government to launch a $50m appeal aimed at supporting more than 84,000 affected individuals. Lila Pieters Yahia also warned of the mounting threat of cholera and other communicable diseases, noting the loss of 5,000 cattle and emphasizing the critical need for sanitation, hygiene, and protection for vulnerable women and girls.

Authorities indicate that the flash floods were likely triggered by a glacial collapse. Meanwhile, Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal emphasized that major greenhouse gas emitters bear a historical responsibility to compensate vulnerable nations, confirming that the government has submitted a formal climate compensation claim letter to international partners. Experts note that while investigations into the exact cause continue, glacier floods have surged in frequency and scale due to rising global temperatures, with a United Nations study revealing that such floods have become nearly five times more frequent since 1950.
