Championship leader Kimi Antonelli delivered a sensational triumph at the Italian Grand Prix, becoming the first home winner in 60 years after starting from 19th on the grid at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza circuit.
The 20-year-old Mercedes driver from nearby Emilia-Romagna claimed his seventh win of the season on Sunday, extending his lead in the drivers' title race as he aims to become Italy's first world champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953. He is the first domestic winner of the Italian GP since Ludovico Scarfiotti in 1966.
In a thrilling race featuring numerous overtaking moves, Antonelli finished 3.857 seconds ahead of teammate and title rival George Russell. Max Verstappen secured third place for Red Bull, leaving Russell 66 points adrift in the championship.
For the passionate Italian crowd, the victory provided consolation after a difficult day for Ferrari, as Charles Leclerc crashed out on lap two and Lewis Hamilton finished sixth behind McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.
Antonelli started at the back due to power-unit penalties but displayed exceptional pace, aided by an early red flag stoppage, before battling past Russell for the victory.
“Unbelievable!” said an emotional Antonelli. “I'm so happy, I could never have imagined being here today, but we pulled it off.”
Alpine pole-sitter Pierre Gasly finished seventh, followed by Arvid Lindblad of Racing Bulls, Franco Colapinto in the second Alpine, and Yuki Tsunoda of Racing Bulls.
“Huge congratulations to Kimi, an incredible result from him,” Russell said of Antonelli's performance.
The race drama began immediately when Hamilton was forced off by Leclerc. Leclerc subsequently lost control exiting the Parabolica on lap two, crashing into the tyre barriers. The race was red-flagged with Russell leading ahead of Gasly, while Antonelli had already climbed to 12th from 19th.
Antonelli took the lead for the first time on lap 18, setting up a fierce battle with Russell. Benefiting from a virtual safety car on lap 29, Antonelli switched to fresh medium tyres while Russell stayed on hard tyres. After a failed attempt on lap 49, Antonelli successfully passed Russell on the next lap to secure the chequered flag.
