Arsenal delivered an emphatic response to Chelsea’s emergence as potential Premier League title contenders with a 2-1 win that ended their rivals’ unbeaten start at the Emirates Stadium.
Mikel Arteta’s side trailed early after a second-minute goal by Morgan Rogers in a pulsating London derby on Sunday. However, the champions showed their resilience with a blistering response to the early setback.
Kai Havertz bagged the equaliser against his former club midway through the first half, and Martin Odegaard netted Arsenal’s winner soon after the interval. The victory marked a statement of intent from second-placed Arsenal, who have won all three league matches so far.
For Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso, the defeat ended his three-game winning run in all competitions since taking charge at Stamford Bridge in the close-season. Alonso acknowledged the significant work still needed before Chelsea can challenge for a title.
Rogers had put Chelsea ahead after just 77 seconds following an assist from Reece James, but defensive vulnerabilities continued to plague the visitors. Havertz leveled the score in the 25th minute by firing through the legs of Maxence Lacroix, before Odegaard sealed the comeback in the 50th minute following an incisive pass from Christos Tzolis.
Despite late efforts from Pedro Neto, Malo Gusto, and Estevao Willian, Arsenal held firm to secure all three points, with Odegaard praising his team's brilliant performance after the match.
