Spain's Carlos Alcaraz delivered a stellar performance to defeat American 20th seed Tommy Paul 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 in a high-voltage tennis encounter on Sunday, securing his spot in the US Open quarterfinals and keeping his quest for back-to-back titles at Flushing Meadows alive.

The seven-time Grand Slam champion showcased top form in New York following a nearly five-month absence due to a right wrist injury, extending his major match-winning streak to 18 with an impressive display of shotmaking against fellow big-hitter Tommy Paul.

“I think I just played my game,” Carlos Alcaraz said. “I tried to play to my style. Tommy’s such a talented player, and his shots are pretty dangerous, and it’s difficult to control the ball when it comes to you. I was ready for a battle.”

Carlos Alcaraz faced early pressure when Tommy Paul fired a remarkable 161km/hour forehand winner around the net at Arthur Ashe Stadium, yet the Spaniard held firm to claim the opening set. The 23-year-old then seized control by securing an early break in the second set.

Despite the home crowd rooting for Tommy Paul, second seed Carlos Alcaraz maintained his dominance with audacious play, pushing his record against American players at Grand Slams toward a potential 13-0 mark.

After overcoming a minor stumble near the finish line, Carlos Alcaraz sealed the victory with a powerful forehand, setting up a quarterfinal clash against either Ben Shelton or Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Reflecting on his return to peak performance at the venue of his maiden Grand Slam triumph four years ago, Carlos Alcaraz noted, “Every time I come here, I play well.”
