Rescue crews in New Delhi are urgently searching through the rubble after a multistorey building collapse killed at least six people and left dozens trapped. The structure, which primarily housed students, collapsed on Sunday near a Delhi University campus in Satya Niketan.

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) reported treating multiple victims from the disaster. In an official statement, AIIMS noted, “Out of the 10 patients, five were brought dead, while one patient who was in critical condition later succumbed to his injuries.”

Emergency personnel, including disaster response teams, police, and firefighters, deployed earthmovers and detection dogs to clear debris and locate survivors. Authorities also evacuated a neighboring building amid fears of structural instability. Fire officer Abhilash Malik stated that up to 40 people could still be trapped beneath the debris, while the exact cause of the accident and total number of survivors remain unconfirmed.

Footage shared online captured a trapped man filming from underneath the rubble while bystanders pleaded for help. Other videos showed local residents attempting initial rescue efforts before official responders arrived at the scene in the Satya Niketan area on September 6, 2026.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasized the urgency of the mission, telling local news outlets, “The most important thing for us is to save the lives of these students. Rescue operations will carry on.” She added, “I assure you we won’t spare the guilty.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s office shared a message on X stating, “Condolences to those who lost their loved ones. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured. Authorities are working at the site and assisting those affected in the mishap.”

Structural failures frequently plague various regions of India throughout the annual rainy season, which spans from June to September. A separate incident occurred on Saturday when a three-storey building collapsed in northern India following heavy rains, though no casualties were reported in that event. Previously in 2025, at least 11 fatalities resulted from a residential building collapse in a northeastern district of New Delhi.
