Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution Lonnie Bunch announced on Tuesday that he will step down from his position by the end of the year, following intense pressure from the administration of United States President Donald Trump.
Bunch leads the organization that oversees one of the world's largest collections of museums and educational and research centers. In a statement, Bunch expressed both pride and sadness as he prepares to leave his role, emphasizing his desire to protect the integrity of the Smithsonian and champion a comprehensive history of the nation.
Since the beginning of President Donald Trump's second term, the Smithsonian has faced severe criticism from conservatives over its historical exhibits dealing with racism and colonialism. While the institution operates independently of direct presidential authority, it relies heavily on federal funding, which the Trump administration threatened to withhold over allegations of promoting an "anti-American ideology".
In July, President Donald Trump ordered the US Department of the Interior to install warning signs near the National Museum of American History to highlight alleged bias. By August, the Interior Department issued a letter demanding changes to the Smithsonian's executive leadership and institutional ideology.
Appointed in 2019, Lonnie Bunch made history as the first African American to lead the 180-year-old institution, having previously served as director of the National Museum of African American History and Culture. The Trump administration has consistently targeted cultural entities promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), issuing executive orders and launching reviews to eliminate practices it views as discriminatory and to promote American exceptionalism instead.
Despite facing ongoing political interference and funding pressures, Bunch received widespread praise from historians and artists, including director Ken Burns, who commended his dedication to preserving the complete American story.
