Demonstrations in the Albanian capital of Tirana turned violent on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, as police and protesters clashed while lawmakers attempted to enter parliament following the summer recess.
The latest rally marked the 100th consecutive day of protests against a controversial luxury development in a protected coastal area, a project linked to US President Donald Trump's family. Demonstrators confronted a police cordon in the city centre, throwing eggs and tomatoes at officers in riot gear.
Crowds also targeted cars transporting members of parliament with plastic water bottles before police intervened. Known as the “flamingo revolution” due to signs depicting the pink birds, the antigovernment movement opposes the construction of a vast luxury hotel in a coastal nature reserve. The venture is connected to Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner.
Scientists and activists warn that preliminary construction work has already inflicted irreparable damage on a pristine stretch of Albania's coast, destroying nesting sites for endangered loggerhead turtles and vulnerable bird species. While Albanian officials have remained tight-lipped about Kushner's involvement, Ivanka Trump has publicly praised the initiative as an “incredible project.” Critics also argue the development will restrict public access to the shoreline.
What began as nightly protests focused solely on the resort has evolved into a broader challenge against Prime Minister Edi Rama and the long-governing Socialist Party. Rama strongly backs the investment, claiming it will modernize the nation. Outside parliament, protesters chanted “Arrest Rama!” as authorities escorted lawmakers. Several individuals were detained during the unrest.
