Firefighters operate at the site of a Russian airstrike in Kramatorsk on August 4, captured by Francisco Richart/Anadolu/Getty Images. Iryna Rybakova is acutely aware that the front line is inching steadily toward Kramatorsk. Having served in eastern Ukraine for several years, she has watched her units being pushed from one strategic hub after another, describing the past few weeks as 'insane.'

The city remains one of Ukraine’s last strongholds in the Donbas region, but Russian forces are closing in. Nearly all of the city’s bridges have been destroyed, and daily barrages of guided bombs and drones have become the norm. 'The attacks happen dozens of times a day,' said Rybakova, a press officer with Ukraine’s 93rd mechanized brigade based in Kramatorsk. 'Dozens of cars, utility buildings, residential buildings, administrative buildings, and garages have been hit; they’re just setting everything on fire.'

As a recent visit to Kyiv by US President Donald Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner concluded without a major breakthrough, Ukraine finds itself increasingly on the defensive along the eastern front. Jennie Olmsted, a Russia analyst at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), noted that while a rapid breakthrough is unlikely, the overall situation has shifted in Moscow’s favor through slow infiltration missions.

Russia advanced into approximately 124 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory in August, achieving this at a massive cost in casualties, according to Western intelligence. Nevertheless, Moscow is steadily chipping away at the 'fortress belt' in the east, which comprises four industrial cities forming the backbone of Ukraine’s eastern defenses: Sloviansk, Kramatorsk, Druzhkivka, and Kostyantynivka. The southern anchor, Kostyantynivka, has been effectively lost as a functional stronghold.

Life for the remaining civilians in these contested zones is becoming increasingly difficult. Hennadiy Yudin, a police officer with the 'White Angels' evacuation unit, reported that reaching certain areas like Dobropillya is now impossible by vehicle due to heavy mining and drone activity, forcing troops to conduct evacuations on foot.

Kramatorsk, which historically served as a critical rear staging area and rest point for exhausted Ukrainian troops, now faces relentless daily shelling. As Russian forces continue their slow advance, remaining residents and officials fear Moscow is actively laying the groundwork for a broader future offensive against Sloviansk.
