Several people have lost their lives and multiple others sustained injuries following an explosion at a temporary ammunition storage facility located near Sarmada in the Idlib countryside of north-west Syria, local health officials confirmed.
Sobhi Assaf, media director at the Idlib Health Directorate, stated that fatalities occurred alongside nine reported injuries resulting from the blast. "The explosions are still continuing, and there are victims whom rescue teams have been unable to retrieve so far because of the explosions caused by the ammunition," Mr Assaf explained.
The Syrian Defence Ministry released a statement confirming that one of its affiliated temporary ammunition storage sites exploded near Sarmada, wounding several personnel. Meanwhile, local sources indicated that civilians were also among the casualties. State broadcaster Al Ekhbariya TV reported a total of eight injuries from the series of blasts, while the exact cause of the incident remains undetermined.
This emergency follows another recent incident in the Idlib countryside where an ammunition-loaded vehicle detonated in nearby Binnish, resulting in at least five deaths and five injuries according to Syrian state media reports.
Historically a rebel stronghold during the civil war, Idlib province remains heavily populated with weapon depots and armed citizens. Following an 11-day offensive in December 2024 led by rebel forces under Hayat Tahrir Al Sham—a former Al Qaeda affiliate—the regime of Bashar Al Assad was successfully toppled, and former members of the group now hold state control.
