Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that its naval forces have captured an unmanned United States submarine near the Strait of Hormuz, intensifying ongoing conflicts between Tehran and Washington over control of the crucial waterway connecting the Gulf and the Arabian Sea.
Iranian state media identified the vessel as a Dive-LD, an autonomous underwater vehicle manufactured by the California-based defence firm Anduril Industries. Measuring approximately six metres (20 feet) long, the submersible is engineered for long-duration missions such as surveillance, seabed mapping, and mine detection.
While Washington maintains that the vessel experienced a malfunction a day prior, the US military reported destroying five Iranian crude oil carriers in retaliation for an Iranian ballistic missile attack on a US Navy warship. Further escalating regional tensions, Iran stated it successfully attacked two US vessels and eight oil tankers.
The IRGC claimed its naval forces carried out a complex intelligence and operational operation at dawn to trap the advanced US submersible. Although the US has not issued an official statement, an unnamed Pentagon spokesperson confirmed the loss of the drone, noting it was an older model deployed to survey regional waters without sensitive data or classified sonar equipment.
Anduril Industries acknowledged the loss of the vessel while downplaying its significance, describing the Dive-LD as an attritable autonomous system designed to operate in high-risk environments. The broader conflict, which expanded significantly following attacks by the US and Israel, has involved major strikes on energy infrastructure, military bases across the region, and mounting casualties, fueling ongoing geopolitical and economic instability.
