Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard delivered a sensational late strike to break Napoli's stern resistance, securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory in Naples on Wednesday as the English champions kicked off their Champions League campaign.

Mikel Arteta’s side, aiming to bounce back from last season's final penalty shootout defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, missed several clear chances against a well-drilled opponent before Odegaard unleashed a powerful shot off the post and into the net from the edge of the box with 15 minutes remaining.

This triumph extends Arsenal's flawless start to the season following three consecutive Premier League victories, while handing Massimiliano Allegri’s team their third straight defeat in all competitions. Arsenal will host Lille on Tuesday, October 13, for their next European fixture, whereas Napoli travel to Villarreal on the same day.

Ahead of the match, injuries to Scott McTominay and Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa prompted Massimiliano Allegri to reshuffle his midfield, introducing Kevin De Bruyne and Billy Gilmour into the starting lineup. Mathias Olivera also returned to the side following a 3-2 defeat away to Inter Milan. Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta made four adjustments from the 2-1 win over Chelsea, handing Piero Hincapie, Mikel Merino, Eberechi Eze, and Viktor Gyokeres their maiden starts of the season.

Napoli adopted a defensive strategy to absorb pressure, stifling Arsenal's attack against a low block while threatening on the counter-attack through Kevin De Bruyne and Matteo Politano, both of whom tested goalkeeper David Raya early on.

Arsenal carved out their first major opening midway through the first half when Alex Meret tipped Mikel Merino’s header over the crossbar. The Gunners continued to press, but Ben White missed the target from a promising position, and Alex Meret scrambled a Piero Hincapie cross-shot off the goal line. Although Rasmus Hojlund provided effective hold-up play for the hosts, Arsenal squandered a golden opportunity before halftime when Bukayo Saka shot over the bar with only the goalkeeper to beat.

Napoli were forced into a goalkeeper change at halftime, bringing on Vanja Milinkovic-Savic to replace the injured Alex Meret. Arsenal picked up the pressure immediately after the break, with Piero Hincapie missing another close-range opportunity.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 75th minute when Martin Odegaard scored his spectacular winner off the post, replicating his recent heroics against Chelsea. Substitute Noni Madueke and Christos Tzolis both came close to extending the lead late in the game, while Kevin De Bruyne wasted a rare Napoli opening by passing across an empty box. Kai Havertz thought he had sealed the victory in stoppage time, but his tap-in was disallowed for offside.
