At least five individuals have lost their lives, and 87 others remain unaccounted for following a devastating fire aboard a ferry in the Philippines, close to a renowned tourist destination within the province of Palawan, as reported by the country's coastguard.
The incident began on Wednesday evening when the blaze engulfed the M/V June Aster approximately 2.2km (1.3 miles) offshore. Footage released by the coastguard on Facebook displayed large portions of the vessel consumed by flames, with five casualties subsequently brought to shore.
Coastguard Captain Noemi Cayabyab provided an update to a local radio station on Thursday, noting that 42 individuals had been successfully rescued up to that point, according to the AFP news agency. "Based on the data we have right now on rescued and the casualties, we still have 87 people who are unaccounted for," she stated, referencing the ship's manifest which recorded a total of 134 passengers and crew members.
"Just to make it clear, this is live data and may change, as our search and rescue operations are ongoing," Cayabyab added. Of the survivors, she noted that 38 were passengers and four belonged to the crew. "However, we have not yet been able to obtain information from the rescued individuals because we have not been able to speak with them," she explained, while efforts to extinguish the fire continued.
Meanwhile, the Reuters news agency indicated that 43 people had been rescued by Wednesday night. The ferry had originally departed from Manila and was approaching Coron in Palawan province when the fire ignited. Current reports have not identified the cause of the disaster.
Maritime incidents are frequent in the Philippines, an archipelago comprising over 7,000 islands that frequently faces harsh monsoon rains and typhoons, creating hazardous travel conditions. Past maritime disasters have often been attributed to inadequate vessel maintenance, overcrowding, and inconsistent enforcement of safety protocols. Notably, a ferry transporting more than 350 people sank near Baluk-baluk island in January, resulting in at least 18 fatalities.
