Ukrainian drones have successfully struck a Russian Caspian Sea port in Dagestan, while simultaneous Russian attacks across Ukraine left at least seven people dead, according to local officials. The escalation comes as Kyiv claimed responsibility for a landmark drone attack that triggered a fire at a natural gas plant deep within Russia’s Arctic region.

In southern Ukraine, an overnight Russian attack on Mykolaiv killed four people. Heorhii Reshetilov, the acting governor of the Mykolaiv region, stated that the strikes hit both civilian and industrial infrastructure, resulting in the deaths of two men and two women, alongside at least 19 reported injuries.

Meanwhile, a drone strike on a shopping centre in the northeastern city of Sumy killed three people, including three children among the victims, according to Oleh Hryhorov, head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration. At least 14 people were wounded in the Sumy attack.

The Russian Ministry of Defence acknowledged the strike in Mykolaiv, asserting that it targeted a drone warehouse. The ministry additionally claimed responsibility for hitting the Ukrainian port of Chornomorsk and two vessels near Odesa on the Black Sea for military purposes.

These developments followed reports from Russian authorities that Ukrainian forces launched a drone attack on the Yamal-Nenets region, located approximately 2,800 kilometres from the Ukrainian border. Dmitry Artyukhov, the region’s governor, reported that the strike targeted an industrial facility in Novy Urengoy. Although the attack was successfully repelled, falling drone debris caused a fire. Artem Zhoga, the Kremlin’s envoy to the Urals, confirmed that Wednesday's strike marked the first time the Arctic part of the region had been hit.

Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces (SOF) confirmed the operation on X, declaring it the deepest strike of the war. The SOF stated they successfully struck two critical Russian plants, Novy Urengoy and Purovsky, located more than 3,000 kilometres away, penetrating an area previously regarded as a safe rear zone for the aggressor.

These facilities play a vital role in Russia’s gas industry by processing large volumes of condensate from the Yamal region, which held an estimated 26.5 trillion cubic metres of gas resources as of 2020. Ukraine has increasingly intensified its long-range strikes inside Russia in response to ongoing daily bombardments of Ukrainian towns and cities, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warning that Russian airspace will remain unsafe throughout the conflict.
