US President Donald Trump has responded to recent sanctions imposed by Britain, France, Canada, and several other Western nations targeting Israeli settlements in the West Bank, confirming plans to hold discussions with various parties regarding the issue.

Speaking to reporters, Donald Trump stated: “I just saw this, and I’m going to speak with Israel, and I’m going to speak with them, and I’ll find out what their thinking is. I completely understand what is happening, but I want to know why this happened all of a sudden.”

The remarks from the US President followed reports that his administration did not object to the British move during a phone call between UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham and President Trump. An informed Western official confirmed that President Trump “did not request a delay” during their conversation. Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio declined to condemn the British action, noting only that “the President has not commented on this matter.”

The White House also worked to distance itself from comments made by US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, who called the sanctions “discrimination against the Jewish people” and “irrational,” clarifying that those statements “were not coordinated with the White House or the State Department.”

Data indicates that the current US position reflects rising tensions over the policies implemented by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government in the West Bank, particularly concerning the E1 area, where successive US administrations have consistently opposed settlement expansion.

Britain announced an unprecedented trade sanctions package, which includes an import ban on all goods originating from West Bank settlements, alongside restrictions on arms exports providing “material” support to Israel. This was done in coordination with Canada, France, and nine other European nations. UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband adopted a sharply critical tone toward settlers, labeling them as “terrorists” engaging in “ethnic cleansing”—an unprecedented rhetorical shift in official British statements toward Israel.

In retaliation, the Israeli government expressed outrage over the Western measures, ordering the closure of the British Consulate in East Jerusalem, expelling British diplomats, and barring 11 left-wing British MPs, including Jeremy Corbyn and Diane Abbott, from entering Israel. This escalation has caused UK-Israeli relations to deteriorate into one of their most tense periods since the establishment of Israel.
