On Saturday, August 15, 2026, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina hosted the "A Safe Step… Every Step Makes a Difference" sports marathon. The event was organized by the Fund for Assistance to Victims of Human Trafficking, which is affiliated with the Cabinet, in cooperation with the Ministry of Youth and Sports. The primary goal of the gathering was to raise public awareness regarding the dangers of human trafficking while promoting community participation in the fight against the crime.
Notable figures in attendance included Heba al-Rafaei, acting head of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina’s External Relations and Media Sector, who represented Bibliotheca Alexandrina Director Ahmed Zayed. Other key attendees were Ambassador Amr Ramadan, chairman of the Board of Directors of the Fund for Assistance to Victims of Human Trafficking; Mahmoud Abdel Aziz, representing the Minister of Youth and Sports; Safaa al-Sherif, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports in Alexandria; and Amira Heikal, Deputy Governor of Alexandria.
Speaking on behalf of Zayed, Heba al-Rafaei welcomed guests and participants. She emphasized that the mission of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina goes beyond preserving heritage and spreading knowledge, aiming also to actively contribute to community development and serve as a platform for dialogue and education. She highlighted the library's belief that knowledge is a vital tool for tackling societal challenges and urged young people to educate themselves about human trafficking, human rights violations, and the exploitation of vulnerable groups.
Ambassador Ramadan stated that organizing the first "A Safe Step" activities alongside the Ministry of Youth and Sports exemplifies strong community cooperation and reinforces participation values. He stressed that combating human trafficking demands broad public awareness and unified efforts across institutions. Meanwhile, Amira Heikal praised the Bibliotheca Alexandrina for supporting youth and hosting targeted events, noting that the initiative successfully engages young people in vital community issues.
The event also featured interactive awareness sessions, games, and competitions to effectively deliver anti-trafficking messages. Proceedings concluded with an awards ceremony honoring the mini-marathon winners, followed by official photographs with participants and guests.
