At least seven inmates have lost their lives and multiple others sustained injuries following a sudden fire at a correctional facility located in a predominantly Kurdish town in northern Syria. According to reports from the Syrian state-run news agency SANA on Saturday, the blaze erupted after prisoners at the Kobane jail initiated a riot amid mounting tensions that surfaced in the town on Friday. Nonetheless, the precise cause of the fire remains officially unconfirmed.

State television reported that dozens of individuals suffered injuries, burns, or suffocation resulting from the riot. Meanwhile, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights indicated that the disturbance began overnight following an administrative decision to transfer several inmates to a different facility in Aleppo.

The unrest follows protests that erupted in Kobane on Friday regarding the death of Sami Sheikhmous Hiso, a former Kurdish fighter. The Agence France-Presse (AFP) news agency noted that Hiso's body, which displayed gunshot wounds, was returned to Kobane on Thursday after he had been kidnapped.

These protests and the subsequent prison riot underscore the persistent divisions lingering in Syria after the removal of long-serving leader Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. Although President Ahmed al-Sharaa, Syria’s new head of state, has committed to establishing an inclusive administration and governing for all citizens, his promises have faced obstacles due to episodes of sectarian violence involving government forces.

In January, Damascus and the Kurdish community in Syria finalized an integration agreement, leading to the incorporation of Kurdish civilian and military institutions into the Syrian state. Despite this, the prison in Kobane continues to be administered by Kurdish authorities and has not yet been transferred to the central government.

Kurdish news outlet Rudaw reported that demonstrations concerning Hiso’s death escalated into violence on Friday, resulting in multiple arrests. Some of the individuals who allegedly attacked security forces during these protests were reportedly among the detainees held inside the prison when the riot and fire took place.

Mazloum Abdi, also recognized as Mazloum Kobani and currently serving as a Syrian presidential adviser, traveled to Kobane on Saturday to hold discussions with senior officials in the area, according to media reports. Abdi assumed his role as presidential adviser last month, shortly after announcing the dissolution of the Syrian Democratic Forces, the Kurdish coalition of armed groups that he previously led.
