Reigning Formula One world champion Lando Norris secured pole position for Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid, edging out current title-race leader Kimi Antonelli in a thrilling qualifying session.
Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton appeared poised to claim his first pole since July 2023 before Italian driver Kimi Antonelli briefly surged into the lead. However, McLaren driver Lando Norris delivered a brilliant final lap at the new Madring circuit, finishing just 0.011 seconds ahead of Kimi Antonelli to take the front of the grid.
Lewis Hamilton settled for fourth after Red Bull's Max Verstappen claimed third place. Lewis Hamilton's teammate Charles Leclerc finished fifth, while Mercedes' George Russell took sixth. The result marked an impressive recovery for Lando Norris, who had battled a gearbox issue during Friday practice.
“I am shocked and a little bit surprised to be here now but my God, it was probably one of the best laps I have done, ever in my career so very, very happy, very proud, very happy for the team,” said Lando Norris. “It was just one of those laps where everything came together.”
McLaren boss Andrea Stella praised the performance as "a masterpiece," noting that Lando Norris overcame a slight error in the final corner to pull off the remarkable lap.
Kimi Antonelli holds a 66-point lead over George Russell in the drivers' championship, with Lewis Hamilton sitting third and Lando Norris in fourth. Reflecting on the session, Kimi Antonelli admitted the qualifying was intense but congratulated Lando Norris and McLaren on their pace.
Max Verstappen expressed satisfaction with his third-place finish, noting that his car felt responsive and allowed him to attack the corners effectively. The top ten grid was rounded out by McLaren's Oscar Piastri in seventh, Red Bull's Liam Lawson in eighth, Franco Colapinto in ninth, and Racing Bulls' Arvid Lindblad in 10th.
