The 35th Abu Dhabi International Book Fair officially commenced at Adnec Centre on Sunday, drawing attention with high-profile events including the launch of the Arabic edition of Reconciliation, a memoir by former Spanish king Juan Carlos I.
During a brief address at the event, Juan Carlos explained his motivation for writing the book alongside French writer Laurence Debray over a two-year period. He noted that he wanted to clarify the realities of Spain’s transition to democracy, stating that press accounts have not always captured the events accurately.
The launch was part of the six-day programme centered around the theme 'Turn the Page, Read the World'. Opening day festivities also featured the unveiling of Archive of Tomorrow: Modern Heritage in Abu Dhabi. Published by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, the bilingual coffee-table book offers a photographic and written history documenting the capital's modern architecture and urban landscapes.
Visitors seeking alternative literary experiences explored the 'Blind Date with a Book' stand, managed by stall manager Hanna Leona. The stall offered popular fiction and non-fiction titles wrapped in brown paper with hidden authors and titles, designed to alleviate decision fatigue for attendees aged 15 and older.
Meanwhile, traditional vendors like Sharjah's Al Ummah Bookshop used the fair to connect with customers face-to-face. Ibrahim Ismail, representing the family business, explained that while the enterprise operates primarily online with direct-to-door delivery, participating in the fair helps preserve personal interactions between booksellers and readers.
The Abu Dhabi International Book Fair continues its run until Friday at Adnec Centre, with free public entry available through online registration.
