Former US CIA director David Petraeus was at a Ukrainian train station when a Russian drone struck a passenger train on Sunday, shortly after a diplomatic train carrying former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other foreign dignitaries had departed from the area. Kyiv described the incident as evidence of the escalating threat Vladimir Putin poses to Europe, with the country's rail operator suggesting it was likely a deliberate attack.

The diplomatic train carrying Johnson, European security officials, and other former leaders from Kyiv to Poland had made an early departure from Yagodyn station—situated about two kilometers (1.2 miles) from the Polish border—due to the constant threat of Russian strikes, according to Ukrainian Railways. That transport had already crossed into Poland prior to the strike. Petraeus was traveling on a separate train that remained at Yagodyn station at the time of the impact.

While reviewing details, the rail operator indicated it is quite likely the Russian drone deliberately targeted the officials' train. Additional Russian drone activity targeted a gas station in the same town on Sunday. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned the strikes on the Yahodyn border crossing point, stating that Putin's terror is directly knocking on the doors of the EU and NATO.

Russia’s Defense Ministry stated through state news agency TASS that its forces targeted railway infrastructure facilities in western Ukraine used for transporting military cargoes from European countries. Boris Johnson condemned the attack in a post to X, expressing bewilderment at the logic behind blowing up a stationary Ukrainian locomotive while highlighting the everyday dangers faced on civilian railways. Former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt, also near the border at the time, shared a video showing a drone hitting a nearby train as passengers evacuated. Petraeus and the European officials had previously attended the Yalta European Strategy (YES) international security conference in Kyiv.

Russia has intensified attacks near the Polish border in recent weeks, specifically at Yahodyn, a major route for Western military and humanitarian aid. Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski warned in Kyiv on Sunday about the wider implications of these strikes. British Defense Minister Wes Streeting similarly noted that the reckless attacks on civilian infrastructure near Poland serve as a stark reminder of the security threats facing Europe, emphasizing that the UK will continue working with allies to bolster regional security.
