Jordan state television reported on Monday that an ammonia gas leak occurred at an industrial complex located in the southern port city of Aqaba.
According to the report, a precautionary evacuation is currently under way at the southern port. At this time, there are no immediate reports of casualties, and further details regarding the cause or extent of the leak remain unavailable.
The Aqaba port serves as a major energy and logistics hub. It features the 1,200km Arab Gas pipeline, which connects Egypt with Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon. Additionally, another pipeline connecting Jordan and Iraq is currently in the planning stage.
The port holds significant importance for global energy markets. This is due to the pipeline built to supply Egyptian gas to markets across the Middle East—including Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon—as well as to Israel via the Arish-Ashqelon pipeline.
More updates will follow as the situation develops.
