CAF President Patrice Motsepe has stated that Gianni Infantino’s future should only be decided through democratic elections, following Ireland's decision to become the latest federation to withdraw its support for the embattled FIFA president.
Gianni Infantino is fighting to save his job after facing a barrage of criticism over his aborted plan to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors. Governing bodies including UEFA, CONCACAF, and AFC stepped up the pressure in a joint letter, declaring that trust had been broken through deception.
However, Patrice Motsepe, who serves as both a FIFA vice president and the Confederation of Africa Football president, insisted that Gianni Infantino’s fate should be decided at the ballot box. Speaking to Sky News, Patrice Motsepe emphasized that member associations should be the ones to decide through an upcoming vote next year.
While in Salzburg for the UEFA Super Cup, Patrice Motsepe held talks with UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin. Despite mounting pressure and the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) joining the English FA and Welsh FA in withdrawing support, six Arab federations, including Qatar, Morocco, and Egypt, offered their backing to Gianni Infantino.
