Ras Al Khaimah is expanding the Jebel Jais hiking network by developing new routes, rehabilitating existing trails, and introducing multi-day journeys on the UAE's highest peak. The expansion includes the Grand Loop, an 80km multi-day mountain route linked to existing Jebel Jais trails, offering opportunities for hiking, climbing, camping, cycling, and exploration. The plan has been announced by Marjan, an investment, hospitality, and lifestyle company in the emirate.
The company is also developing a five-day Via Ferrata climbing route across the cliffs of northern Ras Al Khaimah. This 20km route, divided into four sections of varying difficulty, will be supported by mountain shelters accessible only on foot. The Via Ferrata was inspired by the Via Delle Bocchette in Italy's Brenta Dolomites. Marjan stated that the trail and climbing improvements will continue through the 2026-27 season, though no specific completion timeline has been provided.
UAE residents have welcomed the new routes and Via Ferrata. Laith Al Habahbeh, an experienced hiker of more than 10 years, described them as a welcome addition that will give experienced hikers a chance to prepare for bigger expeditions like climbing Kilimanjaro. Mountaineering coach Faisal Shalmani noted that the new trails will encourage more mountain exploration, boost the local economy, and create opportunities for licensed guides, while also emphasizing the importance of environmental protection and hiker regulation.
Trail rehabilitation is currently underway on the Wadi Khammed to Hidden Oasis route, featuring path improvements, new connecting trails, and updated directional signage. Mountain rescue support will also be available throughout the network. Furthermore, a comprehensive biodiversity assessment conducted by Ajaz Environment Consultants identified numerous plant, bird, and mammal species in the area, which will help guide future habitat protection and trail planning.
