Bruno Fernandes of Manchester United reacts to the team's loss at the Carabao Cup third round match against Brighton on Wednesday. Manchester United’s problems deepened as they crashed out of the League Cup following a stunning 3-2 defeat against Brighton after blowing a two-goal lead.
Michael Carrick’s side slumped to their second successive home defeat following a wretched collapse in the third round at Old Trafford. United had built a comfortable lead through goals from Shea Lacey and Mason Mount inside the opening 10 minutes. However, Charalampos Kostoulas sparked Brighton’s revival, Pascal Gross equalised, and Maxim De Cuyper grabbed the winner to leave Carrick shell-shocked as his team were booed off the pitch.
It was another brutal blow for United following their controversial 1-0 home defeat against Manchester City on Sunday. The referees’ governing body previously admitted that VAR officials were wrong to allow City striker Erland Haaland’s winner, leaving United with only one win from their first four Premier League matches.
Having led United to third place last season in his spell as interim boss, Carrick was expected to oversee a title challenge this term after being appointed on a permanent basis. Yet, United have already lost three of six games across all competitions, placing heavy pressure on Carrick ahead of a trip to Fulham in the top-flight on Sunday.
Amid criticism of United’s close-season transfer recruitment, Carrick’s decision to make eight changes exposed a lack of squad depth. On a brighter note, Shea Lacey offered hope for the future, unlike fellow teenager JJ Gabriel, who has reportedly expressed his desire to leave Old Trafford.
Shea Lacey opened the scoring after just eight minutes, taking possession just inside the Brighton penalty area to lash a clinical finish into the bottom corner for his first ever goal for United. Mason Mount doubled the lead two minutes later, pouncing to fire into the roof of the net after Marcus Rashford’s shot was saved by Jason Steele.
Defensive vulnerabilities resurfaced in first-half stoppage time when Charalampos Kostoulas capitalized on poor marking from Ayden Heaven to drill past Karl Darlow. That setback unsettled United, allowing Pascal Gross to control Luka Vuskovic’s header and fire home an equalizer in the 65th minute from close range. Disarray in the United defense allowed Brighton to strike again in the 70th minute when Maxim De Cuyper swept home a pass from Charalampos Kostoulas from six yards. Late substitutes Bruno Fernandes and Matheus Cunha failed to find an equalizer for the hosts.
The result means Brighton have knocked United out of two separate cup competitions within nine months, following their FA Cup victory at Old Trafford in January. Furthermore, it marked the first time in 50 years that United had lost a home match after holding a 2-0 lead.
Elsewhere, Tammy Abraham starred as Aston Villa secured just their second win of the season, beating Coventry 3-1 at the CBS Arena. Victor Torp had drawn Coventry level with a superb free-kick after Abraham's opener, but a header from Ross Barkley and a second goal from Abraham secured the victory. In other matches, Charly Alcaraz came off the bench to seal Everton’s 1-0 win over Wolves, while fourth-tier Fleetwood Town reached the fourth round for the first time by defeating Sheffield United 1-0. Arsenal, Liverpool, Fulham, and Brentford also secured victories in their respective fixtures.
