Pope Leo XIV gestures as he speaks during his weekly general audience in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican on Wednesday.

Pope Leo XIV stated on Wednesday that ongoing conflicts in the Middle East are severely testing relations between Jews and Christians. He noted that differing viewpoints on the violence have heavily burdened the dialogue between the two communities, though the relationship has not collapsed.

Marking 60 years of the Catholic Church’s engagement in interfaith dialogue through a new message, the Pope reaffirmed the Church's strong condemnation of both antisemitism and Islamophobia.

The message highlighted that recent Middle Eastern conflicts have significantly impacted Jewish-Christian dialogue, placing pressure on numerous communication channels. However, the Pope emphasized that the foundational pillars of dialogue established over six decades of joint work remain strong, providing a necessary base to continue building upon.

Furthermore, Pope Leo characterized the resistance against antisemitism as a shared struggle for both Jews and Christians. He also cautioned that attitudes driven by Islamophobia fail to differentiate between extremist violence and the peaceful daily lives of Muslims globally.
