Syrian singer Assala Nasri delivered a landmark performance in Damascus, marking her first time singing on a Syrian stage in over 15 years. The emotional homecoming follows a long absence driven by her outspoken opposition to former president Bashar Al Assad. Thousands of fans packed Al Fayhaa Sports Hall in the capital on Thursday to witness the singer become visibly moved upon her return.

Titled The Return of Assala, the high-profile concert was backed by the Ministry of Culture as part of Syria's first Art Week, which aims to revive the nation's cultural landscape following years of war and the fall of the Assad regime in December 2024. The 57-year-old artist arrived in Damascus with her family, marking her first performance in her home country since a charity show at Damascus Opera House in February 2010.

Assala opened her two-set performance with Syria Janna (Syria is Heaven), a track she released after Al Assad was toppled, before treating the crowd to her greatest hits. Her return carries immense political and cultural weight due to her active support for the anti-government protests that began in 2011. After speaking out against the regime's crackdown and releasing the solidarity anthem Ah Law Hal Korsy Byehki (If This Chair Could Talk) in 2012, she relocated abroad and was removed from the Syrian Artists Syndicate.

Government and cultural officials heavily promoted the event. Culture Minister Mohammed Yassin Saleh and Artists Syndicate president Mazen Al Natour highlighted the concert as a symbol of renewed artistic freedom and a vital step in encouraging exiled artists to return. The milestone event also coincided with the release of The Syrian Album, a 14-song collection inspired by musical traditions from all 14 of Syria's governorates.

Born in Damascus in 1969 to composer and singer Mostafa Nasri, Assala launched her career in 1991 with the hit Law Ta'rafou (If Only You Knew). Over a career spanning more than three decades, she has released over 25 albums, established herself as a master of the Egyptian tarab style, and maintained a massive following across the Arab world.
