Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, recently explored a significant research project dedicated to documenting the history of Al Khuzam, which holds deep roots in Emirati culture. During the initiative's launch, Sheikh Mohammed was joined by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence; Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed, Second Deputy Ruler of Dubai; and Mohammed Al Gergawi, Minister of Cabinet Affairs and Chairman of the Executive Office of Sheikh Mohammed.

According to the state news agency Wam, the research traces the evolution of Al Khuzam across three distinct phases. These include its origins as a tool for steering camels and navigating the desert, its transition into everyday social attire and lifestyle, and its modern role as a powerful symbol of Emirati identity.

Highlighting the importance of national heritage, the project draws on historical evidence from throughout the Arab world to document references to Al Khuzam in Arabic poetry, where it has long been associated with camels, travel, leadership, and resilience. Furthermore, the initiative details traditional crafting methods—starting from the collection of wool and the spinning of fibres into threads, to braiding ropes and adding knots, rings, and silver chains to blend functional utility with aesthetic value.

Presenting the craft as a comprehensive system of knowledge, skills, materials, and human stories, the project stresses the vital need to pass these traditional skills on to younger generations. Beyond mere preservation, the visual language of Al Khuzam is shown to inspire contemporary design. Local entrepreneurs and designers have already created bespoke collections inspired by its symbolism, successfully repositioning Al Khuzam as a cultural product with global reach and empowering artisans within modern society.
